The vehicle carrying Perseverance entered the Martian atmosphere at 12,000 mph, used a heat shield to avoid burning up, then deployed a 70-foot-diameter parachute while still going nearly twice the speed of sound. Perseverance is similar in scale but is slightly heavier and has about 50 percent more scientific instrumentation, according to NASA. The rover Curiosity, which landed in 2012 far to the east of Perseverance’s location, remains operational. Going back more than half a century, about half of all robotic missions to the planet have failed, although NASA appears to have mastered the feat over the past two decades. Mars is a notoriously difficult place to land a spacecraft. The touchdown followed the “seven minutes of terror” - in homage to the emotional state of engineers rooting for success. Perseverance used its autonomous guidance system to avoid hazardous terrain in the target area, an ancient lake bed known as Jezero Crater. #CountdownToMars /dkM9jE9I6X- NASA's Perseverance Mars Rover February 18, 2021 The pair of photos showed the rover casting a shadow on the Martian landscape. Dust kicked up by the landing covered the glass shields on the cameras. Perseverance, the first multibillion-dollar NASA mission to Mars in nine years, quickly produced two low-resolution images of the landing site - a forlorn landscape pocked with small craters. Someone shouted: “TRN, TRN,” referring to the terrain relative navigation system that allowed Perseverance to land in a rugged area full of natural hazards. “Touchdown confirmed! Perseverance is safely on the surface of Mars, ready to begin seeking the signs of past life,” announced Swati Mohan, the guidance and control operations lead for the mission at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.Ĭheers, clapping and fist-pumps erupted in the control room, which was half-empty because of the coronavirus pandemic. NASA rover Perseverance landed safely Thursday on Mars to begin an ambitious mission to search for signs of past Martian life and obtain samples of soil and rock that could someday be hauled back to Earth for study in laboratories. Mike Wall is the author of " Out There (opens in new tab) " (Grand Central Publishing, 2018 illustrated by Karl Tate), a book about the search for alien life. Exciting discoveries could flow shortly thereafter, as Perseverance will be able to put its full suite of scientific instruments to work at close range.įull story: Perseverance rover confirms existence of ancient Mars lake and river delta The Perseverance team plans to get an up-close look at the fossilized delta - perhaps at Kodiak, perhaps in a different patch of ground - in the not-too-distant future. The sharp Kodiak imagery, which Perseverance captured with its Mastcam-Z camera system from a distance of 1.39 miles (2.24 km), shows distinct layers of sediment that could only have been deposited by a river flowing into a lake, mission scientists say. Indeed, they've already started doing so from afar, analyzing a hill called Kodiak that's thought to be a delta remnant. River deltas here on Earth are great at preserving carbon-containing organic molecules and signs of life itself, so Perseverance team members are eager to explore Jezero's ancient delta. This is just the tiniest sampling, for there are literally thousands to choose from - more than 200,000, in fact. Here are some of the most memorable photos by (and of) the robotic duo over the past 12 months. Ingenuity aced its five-flight prime mission and is now serving as a scout for Perseverance, with a total of 19 Martian sorties under its belt to date. A 4-pound (1.8 kilograms) helicopter named Ingenuity landed with the rover, tasked with showing that aerial exploration is possible on Mars despite the planet's thin atmosphere. Perseverance is not alone on Jezero's floor. It's also collecting and caching dozens of samples for future return to Earth. ![]() The rover is searching for signs of past Mars life in Jezero, which hosted a big lake and a river delta in the ancient past. The car-sized Perseverance rover touched down inside the Red Planet's 28-mile-wide (45 kilometers) Jezero Crater on Feb. NASA's Perseverance rover has now been exploring Mars for a full year, and it has captured some amazing photos during that stretch. ![]() (Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS/Seán Doran)
